Patrick Dempsey Revealed Why He Left Grey’s Anatomy After 11 Seasons
For many Grey’s Anatomy fans, the departure of Dr. Derek Shepherd remains one of the most shocking moments in the show’s history. More than a decade later, Patrick Dempsey has reflected on the decision to leave the hit medical drama, explaining that it ultimately came down to pursuing another passion.
Dempsey, who portrayed the beloved neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd from the series premiere in 2005 until Season 11, discussed his exit during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show.
“It was time to walk away,” Dempsey explained.
After spending nearly ten years on Grey’s Anatomy, the actor decided to focus on professional motorsports, a longtime passion of his. He took part in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), competing against some of the world’s top endurance racing teams.
“That was my love,” Dempsey said of racing.
While many fans were devastated by Derek Shepherd’s tragic death in 2015, Dempsey has always spoken positively about the impact Grey’s Anatomy had on his life and career.
“For me, it’s been a blessing,” he said. “It’s given me a wonderful platform.”
The actor also believes the series inspired countless viewers to pursue careers in medicine.
“I think the best thing that has come out of it is that a lot of young people have gone into the medical profession because of it,” Dempsey said. “I think that’s a great thing.”
Beyond acting, Dempsey has used his fame to support charitable causes. In his hometown of Lewiston, Maine, he founded the Dempsey Center, an organization that provides free support services for people affected by cancer.
The center was inspired by his mother’s long battle with ovarian cancer, which included multiple recurrences over the years.
“It was inspired by my own mother’s cancer journey,” Dempsey explained.
Rather than treating the disease itself, the organization focuses on supporting patients and their families through counseling, nutrition programs, fitness classes, and other holistic services.
“You come out of surgery and your treatment, you may be cured, but you’re not healed,” he said. “That’s where we come in.”
Dempsey has also spoken about the unexpected honor of being named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2023, admitting that the recognition came as a surprise.

Over the years, the actor has become one of television’s most recognizable leading men, thanks not only to Grey’s Anatomy but also to films such as Enchanted, Made of Honor, and Bridget Jones’s Baby.
Although Derek Shepherd’s original run ended in Season 11, Dempsey later made surprise appearances in Grey’s Anatomy, delighting longtime fans and proving that McDreamy remains one of the show’s most beloved characters.
More than twenty years after Grey’s Anatomy premiered, Dempsey’s portrayal of Derek Shepherd continues to be one of the defining roles of his career—and one of the most memorable characters in television history.
