‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 23: Cast Updates, Storylines, Release Date and More

Is Grey’s Anatomy Returning for Season 23? Here’s Everything We Know
More than two decades after its debut, Grey’s Anatomy continues to be one of television’s most enduring and successful dramas. The long-running ABC medical series has now reached 22 seasons and shows no signs of slowing down. Since premiering in 2005, the show has followed the lives of surgeons, residents, and interns working at Seattle’s renowned teaching hospital, now known as Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
The story is set to continue, as ABC has officially renewed Grey’s Anatomy for Season 23.
Has Grey’s Anatomy Been Renewed for Season 23?
Yes. ABC has confirmed that the medical drama will return for another season.
The renewal comes as little surprise given the show’s remarkable longevity and continued popularity. While ratings in the key demographic dipped slightly during Season 22, the series remains a major force for the network and streaming platforms alike.
Season 22 averaged a 0.19 rating among adults 18-49, down slightly from Season 21’s 0.22. However, overall viewership increased, with episodes drawing an average of 2.213 million viewers compared to 2.2 million the previous season.
The show’s streaming performance remains particularly impressive. In 2025, Grey’s Anatomy accumulated more than 40 billion minutes viewed across platforms, making it one of the most-watched streaming series in television.
Showrunner Meg Marinis has previously expressed enthusiasm about continuing the series for years to come.
“I hope to be here as long as they’ll have me,” Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love this show. I love working for Shonda. It feels like home. I’m here for the long haul.”
However, industry reports suggest the renewal may come with budget adjustments that could impact the number of episodes produced and potentially affect cast contracts moving forward.
Who Will Return for Season 23?
Season 23 will move forward without two longtime cast members as regulars. Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver both exited their full-time roles following the Season 22 finale.
Beyond those departures, no additional cast exits have been announced.
The expected returning cast includes original stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, and James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber.
Several longtime fan favorites are also expected to return, including Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Chris Carmack as Atticus “Link” Lincoln, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, and Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu.
The newer generation of doctors is also likely to remain a central part of the story, featuring Alexis Floyd as Simone Griffith, Harry Shum Jr. as Benson “Blue” Kwan, Adelaide Kane as Jules Millin, and Trevor Jackson as Wes Bryant.
With a blend of original cast members, veteran favorites, and newer characters, Season 23 appears poised to continue the show’s tradition of balancing familiar faces with fresh storylines as Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital enters its next chapter.
