After That Shocking Chicago Fire Cliffhanger, Will Severide Walk Away From His Career Plans?

The Season 14 finale of Chicago Fire didn’t just leave Firehouse 51 hanging in one of the most terrifying cliffhangers in recent memory—it may have completely changed the future of Kelly Severide.

Before the devastating emergency call that placed nearly the entire house in mortal danger, Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) was already facing one of the most important crossroads of his career. For perhaps the first time in years, he had to seriously consider a future away from Firehouse 51.

And just as it seemed he had finally made his choice, tragedy struck.

Throughout Season 14, Severide found himself torn between two very different paths. After years of roadblocks and complications, every obstacle standing in the way of his promotion to captain had finally been removed. At the same time, however, another opportunity was quietly calling to him: a full-time position with the Office of Fire Investigation.

For longtime fans, the possibility of Severide moving to OFI made perfect sense.

After all, arson investigation has always been more than just another assignment for him. It’s part of who he is.

Severide possesses a rare instinct for investigative work, a skill inherited in many ways from his late father, Benny Severide (Treat Williams), whose legacy has continued to influence him throughout the series. Over the years, viewers have watched Severide repeatedly demonstrate exceptional talent when it comes to solving arson cases, often thriving in ways few firefighters ever could.

Choosing OFI wouldn’t simply be a career change—it could be viewed as fulfilling his destiny.

Yet leaving Firehouse 51 is another matter entirely.

51 has never been just a workplace for Severide. It is his home, his family, and the place where he has experienced nearly every defining moment of his adult life. Walking away from the house would mean leaving behind the people who have stood beside him through unimaginable loss, triumph, heartbreak, and sacrifice.

Recognizing the significance of the decision, former Battalion Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) returned at the request of the Fire Rescue Division in hopes of convincing Severide to remain with the CFD.

Pascal understood something few others could.

Firehouse 51 needs Kelly Severide.

During their conversation, Severide admitted that OFI represented the only position that could ever tempt him to leave traditional firefighting. That revelation alone highlighted just how seriously he was considering the move.

Even Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) acknowledged that a transfer to OFI might not be such a bad idea.

For one thing, it would be safer.

After years spent risking his life inside burning buildings, OFI would offer Severide a chance to continue serving the city while facing considerably fewer life-threatening situations. With the couple also potentially welcoming their foster son Isaiah (Hero Hunter) back into their lives, stability and safety suddenly carry more weight than ever before.

The timing seemed almost perfect.

Then came the finale’s shocking emergency.

Just before the catastrophic call that left nearly all of Firehouse 51 trapped in a life-or-death situation, Severide informed Pascal that he had finally made his decision.

Unfortunately, viewers never learned what that decision actually was.

And now, thanks to the explosive cliffhanger, there is every reason to believe that whatever Severide initially chose could dramatically change.

If the finale ultimately results in the death of a firefighter—or even serious injuries to members of 51—the emotional fallout could profoundly affect Severide. Losing one of his own has always hit him harder than almost anything else, and another devastating loss could easily convince him that Firehouse 51 needs him now more than ever.

Rather than leaving, Severide may decide to remain with the CFD to help his family heal.

He has always been fiercely loyal to the people of 51, and walking away during one of the house’s darkest moments simply doesn’t feel like something Severide would do.

At the same time, choosing to stay wouldn’t necessarily mean abandoning OFI forever.

The series has repeatedly shown that Severide can successfully balance his responsibilities at Firehouse 51 while continuing to pursue arson investigations. It’s entirely possible that Season 15 could see him maintain his role at 51 while taking on more OFI cases, allowing him to honor both sides of his identity.

Because in many ways, Severide has always lived in two worlds: firefighter and investigator.

Ultimately, it remains difficult to imagine Chicago Fire without Kelly Severide at Firehouse 51. As long as Taylor Kinney continues to lead the series, many fans believe Severide’s heart will always belong to the CFD—and more specifically, to 51.

Still, after such a shocking finale, nothing can be taken for granted.

Did Severide decide to leave for OFI? Did the tragedy at the end of Season 14 force him to reconsider? Or could the cliffhanger push him toward an entirely different future?

One thing is certain: when Chicago Fire returns, Kelly Severide’s decision could reshape not only his own future, but the future of Firehouse 51 itself.
