Boston Blue Season 2 Production Update: Filming Timeline Finally Becomes Clear
One of the biggest Boston Blue updates this week answers a question fans have been asking ever since the Season 1 finale:
When does Season 2 actually start filming?
According to a new report from TV Insider, production had not yet begun as of June 26, but filming is expected to start in early July after Donnie Wahlberg finishes the current leg of his New Kids on the Block Las Vegas residency. While CBS has not officially confirmed the exact start date, industry production listings point to an early July launch. (TV Insider)
The timing fits perfectly with CBS’s plan to bring Boston Blue back during its regular Friday night slot this fall. Although the network has not announced a specific premiere date, Season 2 remains part of the 2026–27 primetime schedule. (TV Insider)
The report also revisits one of the most talked-about behind-the-scenes stories of the year.
Wahlberg previously revealed that he offered to give up half of his salary if it would allow the series to film entirely in Boston. Despite the offer, CBS concluded that producing the show there full-time would still be too expensive, so Toronto will once again serve as the primary filming location, with select exterior scenes expected to be shot in Boston. Meanwhile, excitement continues building around Season 2’s storylines.
The new season will pick up after the shocking finale, which left Brian Rodgers’ fate unknown following the harbor attack. Producers have already promised viewers won’t have to wait long for answers, while Danny Reagan’s promotion into a leadership role and Lena Silver’s recovery will drive much of the early season. Another storyline fans are watching closely is the expansion of the Blue Bloods universe.
Showrunners have reiterated that they want to continue welcoming familiar characters whenever the story naturally allows. That keeps speculation alive about future appearances by Tom Selleck, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray, and other members of the Reagan family, although no additional casting announcements have been made. For now, the biggest news is simple: after weeks of waiting, Boston Blue is finally preparing to roll cameras again.
If production begins on schedule in early July, fans can expect the first behind-the-scenes photos, casting announcements, and possibly even a teaser for Season 2 later this summer. (TV Insider)
