The casting news that just dropped is absolutely unhinged in the best possible way. And that is not even the half of it. The Late Night Host in the Room
Let’s talk about the elephant — or rather, the British talk show host — standing in the middle of Salem.
John Oliver is officially coming to Days of Our Lives. I am staring at my screen and I still cannot fully process it. If you have watched Last Week Tonight on HBO, you know that back in March, Oliver basically got down on his knees and begged the daytime soap world for a role. He wanted a real character. He wanted a ridiculous name. He wanted a storyline dripping with classic, over-the-top soap opera absurdity.
And executive producer Ken Corday actually answered the call.
John Oliver will be in Salem for a short arc airing on August 11th, 12th, and 14th. And here is the coolest part — he gave a massive shout-out to Soaphub on his show for covering his campaign. That kind of recognition is huge for the soap community, and it is proof that the genre is still very much alive in the cultural conversation.
What Is He Doing in Salem?
The real question is: what is John Oliver actually going to do when he gets there?
The promo picture tells us everything we need to know — and nothing at all. It shows John Oliver wearing a giant, ridiculous Elvis wig, standing in a room with EJ DiMera. Just let that image sink in for a moment. EJ DiMera — the ruthless, cold-blooded CEO of DiMera Enterprises, a man currently drowning in a dark, menacing tainted-drug scandal — having to deal with John Oliver in an Elvis wig.
Dan Feuerriegel, the actor playing EJ, is absolutely crushing this storyline right now. His portrayal of a man slowly being consumed by his own darkness is gripping television. So throwing a comedian directly into his orbit is a stroke of pure genius by the writers.
Our best theory? John Oliver’s character is going to be some kind of bizarre hired gun. Or maybe a fake Elvis impersonator that EJ hires to cover up a crime or infiltrate a party. EJ is so serious and stiff these days, terrified of federal prison, watching his empire crumble around him. Putting him in a room with a complete wildcard is going to be pure television gold.
John Oliver is also doing a stint on General Hospital in early July, and the producers over there have already praised his professionalism. But for Salem? We want full camp. Remember those random celebrity cameos from years past that completely derailed the serious plots in the best way? That is exactly the energy we need here.
But First — Lexie’s Reckoning
Before the Elvis wig makes its debut, Salem has a much darker appointment to keep.
Lexie Carver is about to unleash everything she has been holding inside. The woman who was given a second chance at life — and then watched that second chance crumble because of her son’s arrogance — is done being silent. She is done smiling through the dizziness and the neurological symptoms and the terror of knowing her body is failing her again.
She is going to destroy EJ.
Not physically, perhaps. But emotionally. Verbally. In a way that will leave scars far deeper than any punch could. EJ played God. He brought his mother back from the dead not out of love, but out of DiMera arrogance — the belief that he could control Dr. Rolf’s dark science, that he could cheat death itself without consequences. And now Lexie is the one paying the price.
The showdown coming to the DiMera mansion is going to be devastating. Lexie has been holding back for too long, protecting Abe from the truth, protecting everyone from the weight of what is happening to her. But that restraint is about to shatter. And when it does, EJ is going to feel the full force of a mother’s heartbreak — and a woman
