BREAKING NEWS: Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo involved in serious car accident

As the Democrats scramble for a potential replacement for Maine Democrat Graham Platner, a new report suggests former Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey could be an unlikely favorite for the position.
The Democratic Party cut off all financial support and endorsements for Platner following a Politico report in which a former girlfriend accused the Marine Corps veteran of rape. With Platner’s withdrawal expected, Democrats will have roughly two weeks to select a new candidate to take on incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
According to the Maine Wire, Dempsey, the 60-year-old actor best known for playing Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, could be a viable option. The outlet described him as a “wild card” who could inject energy into the midterm campaign.
“The Lewiston native has long maintained strong ties to Maine through both his acting career and his charitable work with the Dempsey Center,” wrote Maine Wire’s Jon Featherston, who noted that “outside traditional political circles,” Dempsey’s name is being taken seriously.
He continued, “Unlike many of the political figures being discussed, Dempsey enjoys widespread name recognition and a broadly positive public image. Political observers note that Dempsey could immediately attract national media attention, energize Democratic donors, and potentially appeal to women voters, independents, and those looking for a political outsider.”
Dempsey himself hasn’t commented on the situation, but that hasn’t stopped fans from sharing their excitement over a potential Senator McDreamy.
“Seen some people suggest Patrick Dempsey and I can’t lie it would be hilarious if doctor mcdreamy became a US senator,” wrote one X user.
“McDreamy for Senate? Patrick Dempsey, come on down! Maine’s own Grey’s Anatomy heartthrob could trade the OR for the Senate floor. Finally, a politician who knows how to handle drama and save lives,” said another.
“There is only one clear choice for Maine. Someone who has the looks. Someone who can represent all corners of Maine. Someone who has absurdly high favorables. Someone who will deliver Medicare for All. His name is Patrick Dempsey,” another added.
Another wrote, “Nice guy. He has supported Dems. Was with Biden in Maine. Busy with his new tv show, racing & events for The Dempsey Center in honor of his mom. He brilliantly helps countless cancer patients for free. I’d support him!”
“Patrick Dempsey? Is it for real? That ends Susan Collins for sure,” one commenter added.
“If the democrats put Patrick Dempsey in place of Platner they will have a better chance of beating Collins than leaving Platner. IMO,” said another.
“Patrick Dempsey, quit starring in fox’s crime drama ‘memory of a killer,’ and run for senator of maine,” another added.
Dempsey currently stars in the main role of Angelo Doyle in the Fox crime drama Memory of a Killer, which premiered on January 25, 2026. The series was renewed for a second season in April 2026.
