Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 ended with one of the most dramatic finales in recent memory, leaving fans with several unanswered questions as they look ahead to Season 23.

While a devastating bridge collapse created chaos at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the finale also delivered several major character moments. Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh finally got engaged, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman shared an emotional farewell, and Amelia Shepherd unexpectedly found romance with Cass Beckman.

One of the episode’s biggest shocks, however, involved Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan, played by Harry Shum Jr. In the closing moments of the finale, Dr. Richard Webber fired the first-year surgical resident after discovering that he had secretly administered an experimental hydrogel treatment to a liver cancer patient. The treatment had not been approved by the FDA, making it a serious violation of hospital protocol. Although Dr. Miranda Bailey attempted to take responsibility for the decision, Webber ultimately held Blue accountable.

Speaking to E! News, Shum Jr. said he appreciated the complexity of the storyline and the opportunity to explore a doctor making a difficult mistake for the right reasons.

“I think it’s important to show doctors making mistakes, especially when those mistakes come from a place of compassion and good intentions,” the actor explained. “Blue wasn’t acting recklessly. He genuinely wanted to give a patient the chance to choose life over death.”

Despite the dramatic cliffhanger, Shum Jr. admitted that he has no idea what lies ahead for his character.

“I’m just as much in the dark as the audience,” he said. “The big question is whether viewers want to see Blue leave for good or fight his way back to Grey Sloan.”

While Blue’s future remains uncertain, two longtime cast members officially said goodbye to the series. Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver concluded Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman’s journey with a hopeful ending. After divorcing earlier in the season, the couple ultimately reconciled and decided to move to Paris together, where Teddy will begin a new role leading a medical research incubator.

Reflecting on the departure, McKidd told Entertainment Weekly that he was grateful the writers chose a positive ending rather than another tragic loss.Grey's Anatomy': Harry Shum Jr. Teases Addison's Fate and His Season 20 Wishlist (Exclusive) | Entertainment Tonight

“There have been so many deaths on the show recently,” McKidd said. “I’m not sure the audience is ready for more heartbreak right now. Seeing Teddy and Owen get a happy ending feels like the right message. There’s already enough darkness in the world, and sometimes people need a little hope.”

With major exits, unexpected romances, and Blue Kwan’s future hanging in the balance, Grey’s Anatomy has set the stage for what could be one of the most anticipated seasons in the show’s history.
