Who’s Staying and Who’s Leaving? ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 23 Cast Shakeup Explained

Which Grey’s Anatomy Stars Are Returning for Season 23 — and Who’s Saying Goodbye?
Grey’s Anatomy may be heading into its 23rd season, but the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are set to look a little different when the beloved medical drama returns. Following a series of surprising departures and behind-the-scenes changes, fans are eagerly trying to figure out which familiar faces will remain and which characters have reached the end of their journeys.
The long-running ABC hit has never shied away from cast shakeups, but the past year has brought some of the most significant changes in recent memory.
Earlier in the season, viewers were stunned by the unexpected death of Monica, played by Natalie Morales. The loss marked one of several major storyline developments that reshaped the show’s landscape. Shortly afterward, Amelia Shepherd, portrayed by Caterina Scorsone, made the difficult decision to step away from Grey Sloan Memorial and take a sabbatical.
While Amelia’s departure was written into the story, reports later revealed that Scorsone’s extended absence was also connected to the show’s ongoing budget-reduction efforts. Her break is expected to continue through the end of 2025, making her future involvement in Season 23 uncertain.
The cost-cutting measures have affected much of the veteran cast. In an effort to manage production expenses, Grey’s Anatomy has reportedly reduced minimum episode guarantees for longtime cast members from 18 episodes per season to just 14. As a result, many fan-favorite characters are expected to appear less frequently moving forward.
Speaking about the difficult decisions, showrunner Meg Marinis acknowledged that balancing storytelling and budget realities has become increasingly challenging.
“Over the last couple of seasons, we’ve had to reduce the cast somewhat because of industry-wide budget cuts,” Marinis explained. “Everyone has strong feelings about their favorite characters, but when people are upset about someone leaving, it usually means the story mattered.”
Despite the challenges, Marinis suggested that emotional exits remain an important part of the show’s storytelling DNA.
The biggest casting shock arrived in March 2026 when news broke that Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver would be leaving the series. Their departures mark the end of an era for two of the show’s most recognizable characters, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman.
Since their introductions, Owen and Teddy have experienced one of the most complicated and enduring relationships in Grey’s Anatomy history. After years of heartbreak, misunderstandings, and second chances, fans have watched the pair repeatedly find their way back to one another.
Series creator Shonda Rhimes later offered a glimpse into what viewers can expect from their final storyline, hinting that the couple will receive a satisfying conclusion.
“Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen,” Rhimes said in a statement. “They are two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It’s both bittersweet and joyful to give them the happy ending their story deserves.”
Rhimes also paid tribute to McKidd and Raver for their years of dedication to the series.
“Kevin and Kim have brought extraordinary talent, heart, and depth to these characters,” she said. “Their contributions have left a lasting impact on Grey’s Anatomy, both on-screen and behind the scenes.”
While she admitted that their absence will be deeply felt, Rhimes expressed excitement about what lies ahead for both actors.
“Everyone will miss seeing them walking the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial,” she added. “But I’m excited to see where their careers and journeys take them next.”
As Season 23 approaches, one thing is clear: Grey’s Anatomy is once again entering a period of transformation. While some beloved characters are preparing to say goodbye, others will continue carrying the story forward, ensuring that the iconic medical drama remains as unpredictable as ever.
