Beloved ‘Chicago Fire’ Star David Eigenberg Reportedly Dies at 61, Leaving Fans Heartbroken
Over the years, viewers have seen numerous fan-favorite characters leave the series, whether permanently or temporarily. Even some of the show’s biggest stars have stepped away from the action. In 2023, for example, fans were stunned when leading man Taylor Kinney took a leave of absence from the show to focus on a personal matter. His extended hiatus left a noticeable void at Firehouse 51, making his eventual return in January 2024 all the more emotional for longtime viewers.
Fortunately, Chicago Fire has also developed a habit of bringing back familiar faces when fans least expect it—and now another beloved character is making her long-awaited return.
Actress Katelynn Shennett, who first joined the series in 2020 as Kylie Estevez, has officially confirmed that she is heading back to Firehouse 51 following her departure earlier this year.
The exciting announcement came directly from the actress herself. Taking to Instagram, Katelynn shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos from the set, instantly sending fans into celebration mode.
In one Instagram Story, the actress posted a cheerful mirror selfie from her trailer, writing: “The feeling when you’re back on set with all your friends,” accompanied by a fire emoji. The post strongly suggested that filming was already underway and that Kylie would soon be making her on-screen comeback.
She followed that post with another image showing her trailer door, complete with her character’s name proudly displayed outside. Adding even more intrigue, Katelynn captioned the photo simply: “Till next time.”
After wrapping filming, the actress shared one final snapshot featuring her dog curled up beside her, joking: “Post set pup cuddles are unmatched.”
While details surrounding Kylie’s return remain tightly under wraps, the confirmation alone has been enough to excite the show’s dedicated fan base.
At this point, NBC has not revealed exactly how extensive Kylie’s appearance will be, nor has the network confirmed which episode will feature her return. However, with Chicago Fire scheduled to resume following its midseason hiatus on January 7, many fans are already speculating that Kylie could reappear shortly after the show’s return.
Since joining Chicago Fire, Katelynn has appeared in an impressive 44 episodes, making Kylie one of the show’s most memorable recurring characters. Over the years, viewers watched her evolve from an ambitious young civilian into a capable and determined firefighter candidate, earning the respect and admiration of both the Firehouse 51 team and audiences at home.
Kylie last appeared during Season 13, in an episode that aired in February 2025. In that appearance, she reunited with Christopher Herrmann, played by David Eigenberg, to investigate a puzzling case involving missing fire hydrants. The storyline offered fans a fun and unexpected partnership between the two characters and served as Kylie’s most recent visit to Firehouse 51.
Her return arrives during a period of significant transition for Chicago Fire. Ahead of Season 14, the series said goodbye to longtime cast members Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett, although Lockett briefly returned to provide closure for his character’s storyline.
At the same time, the show welcomed newcomer Brandon Larracuente as firefighter Sal Vásquez, bringing fresh energy to the ensemble.
Speaking recently about joining the Chicago Fire family, Brandon revealed just how welcoming the cast has been. One of his favorite early memories involved a cast dinner organized by David Eigenberg and his wife.
“Everyone’s been great,” Brandon shared. “Before we shot anything, David and his wife set up a big cast dinner. What was really nice was it wasn’t just the current cast—there were cast members from previous seasons there too. It was amazing to see how close everyone still is.”
That sense of family has always been one of Chicago Fire’s greatest strengths, both on-screen and behind the scenes.
And now, with Kylie Estevez officially returning to Firehouse 51, fans have yet another reason to look forward to the rest of the season.
